What is the investor password and why is it important?
When you open a trading account in MetaTrader 4 or MetaTrader 5, you receive two passwords:
The main password (full access for trading)
The investor password (read-only access)
The investor password is useful if you want to share your trading activity with someone else — without allowing them to make trades.
When would you use it?
Let’s say you’re trading and want to show a friend or colleague your account’s performance. But you want to make sure they can only view, not buy or sell.
✅ You just need to give them:
Your trading account number
The server name
Your investor password
🔒 They’ll be able to see everything happening in your account, but they won’t be able to place trades.
How can you find or change your investor password?
Your investor password is created automatically when you open a MetaTrader account. But you can also change it manually on the MetaTrader platform.
Steps to view or generate your investor password
Open MetaTrader 4 or 5
Go to the "Tools" menu
Select "Options"
Open the "Server" tab
Click the "Change" button
Check the option "Change investor (read-only) password"
Final step: Set your new investor password
After clicking “Change”, a menu will appear where you should select:
"Change investor password (read-only)"
Then:
In the "New password" field, type your new investor password
Confirm it in the "Confirm" field
Click "OK"
✅ Done! Your new investor password will take effect immediately.
