What is Swap and how is it accrued in each terminal?

Updated over 2 weeks ago

A swap is a fee that’s charged or credited when you hold a position overnight. This process, also known as "rollover," happens automatically depending on the instrument you're trading and the platform you're using.

How much is charged for swap?

Swap fees vary depending on:

  • The trading instrument

  • The platform you’re using (Libertex, MetaTrader 4 or 5)

🔎 You can find the exact fee for each instrument in the CFD Specifications within your platform.

On which days is the swap charged?

That depends on both the instrument and the trading platform. Here's a breakdown:

🔸 For most instruments (excluding cryptocurrencies):

In both Libertex and MT4/MT5:

  • 🕘 Monday to Tuesday

  • 🕘 Tuesday to Wednesday

  • 🕘 Wednesday to Thursday

  • 🕘 Thursday to Friday

  • 🕘 Friday to Monday (charged between Friday and Saturday nights)

🪙 For cryptocurrencies:

In Libertex:

  • Monday → Tuesday

  • Tuesday → Wednesday

  • Wednesday → Thursday

  • Thursday → Friday

  • Friday → Saturday

  • Saturday → Sunday

  • Sunday → Monday

In MT4/MT5:

  • Same structure as for regular instruments (including Friday → Monday rollover)

Real example

🔍 Let’s say you open a EUR/USD trade in MetaTrader 4 on Monday afternoon, and close it on Sunday.

➡️ That trade will pass through the swap process 5 times.

What is a triple swap?

Once per week, you’ll see a triple swap fee. This compensates for the weekend when markets are closed.

Why is a triple fee charged?

It’s based on the internationally accepted TOM NEXT (Tomorrow–Next Day) system. When you hold a trade from Wednesday to Thursday, the value delivery would normally fall on Saturday, a non-trading day. So the system charges a 3-day swap to account for the weekend.

When is the triple swap applied?

In the Libertex terminal:

  • 🔹 Standard instruments (not CFDs): Wednesday → Thursday

  • 🔸 CFDs (except crypto): Friday → Saturday

  • 🚫 Crypto CFDs: No triple swap is applied

In MetaTrader 4/5:

  • All instruments (except CFDs): Wednesday → Thursday

  • CFDs (including cryptocurrencies): Friday → Saturday

What time is the swap charged?

🕘 Swap is officially charged at 21:00 GMT, but this varies depending on the platform:

In Libertex:

  • The platform time = GMT, so the swap is charged exactly at 21:00.

In MT4/MT5:

  • Platform time is:

    • GMT+3 in summer → swap at 00:00

    • GMT+2 in winter → swap at 23:00

📌 Daylight saving time usually changes in March (to summer time) and November (to winter time).

Final thoughts

Swap is an important part of trading if you hold positions for more than one day. Knowing when and how it’s charged helps you plan better and avoid surprises in your results.
