What is the difference between MetaTrader 5 and MetaTrader 4?

Similar, but not the same

🔍MetaTrader 4 (MT4) and MetaTrader 5 (MT5) are both widely used trading platforms. At first glance, they might seem very similar, but there are key differences you should know before deciding which one to use.

Different programming languages

💻 One major difference is the programming language behind each platform:

  • MT4 uses MQL4

  • MT5 uses MQL5

This affects how you can customize each platform and what kind of tools you can add, such as indicators, expert advisors (EAs), and scripts.

Customization & Community

Since MT4 has been around longer, it has a larger user base and more third-party tools available, including:

✅ More custom indicators
✅ More expert advisors
✅ Greater compatibility with external content

MT5 is newer and offers more advanced features, but its community and plugin library are still growing.

Which one should you choose?

👉 If you're already familiar with MetaTrader, you might feel more at home with MT4.
👉 If you want a more modern platform with multi-asset trading and faster strategy testing, MT5 could be a better fit.

The best part? You can try both and see which one suits your trading style.
